Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared Rice Sch /La Escuela Rice, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Herod Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Rice Sch /La Escuela Rice has a regular student population of 1,062 with a 17.1 students/teacher ratio while Herod Elementary School has 766 students and a student-teacher ratio of 17 students/teacher ratio.
Rice Sch /La Escuela Rice performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. On the other hand, Herod Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 82 in student achievement, 91 in school progress, 81 in closing performance gaps and 88 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Rice Sch /La Escuela Rice's five out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Science, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Herod Elementary School’s only distinction designation is in Science.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, African Americans comprise the biggest group at Rice Sch /La Escuela Rice. They make up for 45.86% of student population, followed by Hispanics (45.29%), Asians (3.95%), Whites or Caucasians (3.11%) and Two or More Races (1.69%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
The student population at Herod Elementary School is also predominantly by Hispanics at 36.55%, followed by African Americans (30.42%), Whites or Caucasians (21.28%), Asians (7.31%), Two or More Races (4.05%) and Native Americans (0.26%).
Based on household incomes, Rice Sch /La Escuela Rice’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 69.59% compared to 54.83% at Herod Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Rice Sch /La Escuela Rice has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 22.98% of its student population compared to 24.67% at Herod Elementary School.
In addition, Rice Sch /La Escuela Rice has 21.47% bilingual students, 22.79% are in the gifted and talented program, while 8.57% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Herod Elementary School with 31.46% bilingual students, 30.29% gifted and talented students and 6.27% students in the special education program.
