Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared Preston Hollow Elementary School, which is a part of DALLAS ISD, with James Bowie Elementary School, which is a part of DALLAS ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Preston Hollow Elementary School has a regular student population of 452 with a 15.4 students/teacher ratio while James Bowie Elementary School has 332 students and a student-teacher ratio of 11.4 students/teacher ratio.
Preston Hollow Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Preston Hollow Elementary School’s two out of seven distinctions are in post-secondary and 25% closing performance gaps. James Bowie Elementary School's five out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, post-secondary and 25% closing performance gaps.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Preston Hollow Elementary School is Hispanics who make up nearly 68.14% of student population, followed by African Americans (19.03%), Whites or Caucasians (8.85%), Two or More Races (2.43%), Native Americans (0.88%) and Asians (0.66%).
At James Bowie Elementary School, Hispanics make up 90.66% of student population, followed by African Americans (7.23%), Whites or Caucasians (1.81%) and Two or More Races (0.30%). There is no Asians and Native Americansstudents in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Preston Hollow Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 76.77% compared to 97.29% at James Bowie Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Preston Hollow Elementary School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 55.09% of its student population compared to 67.77% at James Bowie Elementary School.
In addition, Preston Hollow Elementary School has 54.87% bilingual students, 16.59% are in the gifted and talented program, while 9.73% are in the special education program. This stacks up against James Bowie Elementary School with 63.55% bilingual students, 17.17% gifted and talented students and 10.54% students in the special education program.
