As your children go through high school, choosing the right school is equally important as deciding on a perfect home. High school is when students are given the tools to figure out the paths they want to pursue as adults. There are more subjects and extra-curricular activities that students can choose from. When we compared Poteet High School, which is a part of MESQUITE ISD, with Mesquite High School, which is a part of MESQUITE ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Poteet High School’s regular student population is 1,642 with a student-teacher ratio of 14.7 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Mesquite High School is 2,337 students and a student-teacher ratio of 13 students/teacher ratio.
Poteet High School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 86 in student achievement, 85 in school progress and 83 in closing performance gaps. It scored 85 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Mesquite High School earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 79 in student achievement, 81 in school progress, 71 in closing performance gaps and 78 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Poteet High School's two out of seven distinctions are in Science and 25% closing performance gaps. Except for Science, Mesquite High School earned one out of seven distinctions.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Poteet High School. They make up for 47.93% of student population, followed by African Americans (29.54%), Whites or Caucasians (15.47%), Asians (3.23%), Two or More Races (2.98%) and Native Americans (0.55%).
At Mesquite High School, Hispanics are the biggest group, comprising 57.55% of student population, followed by African Americans (28.03%), Whites or Caucasians (10.87%), Two or More Races (1.63%), Asians (1.37%) and Native Americans (0.47%).
Based on household incomes, the Poteet High School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 62.61% compared to 74.20% at Mesquite High School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Poteet High School has 194 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 11.81% of student population. Mesquite High School has significantly more ELLs at 441 or about 18.87% of student population.
Poteet High School’s bilingual students comprise 11.21%, gifted and talented students, 10.11%, while 9.32% are in the special education program. Mesquite High School bilingual students comprise 17.84%, gifted and talented students, 7.02%, and 10.95% are in the special education program.
Poteet High School's 111 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 6.7 years with individual teaching experience averaging nearly 11.2 years. Mesquite High School's 179 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 7.3 years with individual teaching experience averaging close to 10.6 years.
Of its teaching staff, Poteet High School has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has 16 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 37 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 17 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 30 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including nine beginning teachers. Mesquite High School has seven teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has 18 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 46 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 42 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 56 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including 11 beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. Poteet High School employs 64 female teachers and 46 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, six special education teachers are being assisted by 11 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. The school also employs seven staff members in the school administration department and 13 more working as school support staff.
On the other hand, Mesquite High School employs 102 female teachers and 77 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, eight special education teachers are being assisted by 15 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. The school also employs eight staff members in the school administration department and 24 more working as school support staff.
