As your children go through high school, choosing the right school is equally important as deciding on a perfect home. High school is when students are given the tools to figure out the paths they want to pursue as adults. There are more subjects and extra-curricular activities that students can choose from. When we compared Northside High School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with North Houston Early College High School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a big difference in ratings.
Northside High School’s regular student population is 1,319 with a student-teacher ratio of 16.1 students/teacher ratio. The student population at North Houston Early College High School is 485 students and a student-teacher ratio of 21.2 students/teacher ratio.
Northside High School earned a State accountability rating of C (70-79) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 67 in student achievement, 78 in school progress and 73 in closing performance gaps. It scored 77 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, North Houston Early College High School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 97 in student achievement, 96 in school progress, 100 in closing performance gaps and 98 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Both schools garnered only three distinction designations or awards for performance. For Northside High School these are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics and Social Studies while North Houston Early College High School secured in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Social Studies and 25% closing performance gaps.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Northside High School is Hispanics who make up nearly 85.14% of student population, followed by African Americans (13.57%), Whites or Caucasians (0.83%), Two or More Races (0.30%), Asians (0.08%) and Native Americans (0.08%).
At North Houston Early College High School, Hispanics make up 88.87% of student population, followed by African Americans (9.69%), Whites or Caucasians (0.82%), Native Americans (0.41%) and Asians (0.21%). There is no Two or More Races student in the school.
Based on household incomes, Northside High School’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly higher at 95.00% compared to 87.63% at North Houston Early College High School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Northside High School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 26.91% of its student population compared to 17.11% at North Houston Early College High School.
In addition, Northside High School has 26.16% bilingual students, 13.87% are in the gifted and talented program, while 12.13% are in the special education program. This stacks up against North Houston Early College High School with 17.94% bilingual students, 47.63% gifted and talented students and 0.82% students in the special education program.
Northside High School's 82 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 9.8 years with individual teaching experience averaging nearly 13.1 years. North Houston Early College High School's 22 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 9.7 years with individual teaching experience averaging close to 12.2 years.
Of its teaching staff, Northside High School has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has 12 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 30 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 18 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 16 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including three beginning teachers. North Houston Early College High School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has three teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, nine teachers have worked for 11-20 years, five teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while four teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including one beginning teacher only.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. Northside High School employs 49 female teachers and 33 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, five special education teachers are being assisted by eight teachers aides or paraprofessionals. The school also employs five staff members in the school administration department and 12 more working as school support staff.
On the other hand, North Houston Early College High School employs 11 female teachers and 11 male teachers. The school also employs one staff members in the school administration department and five more working as school support staff.
