Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. As they assert their independence, their responsibilities increase, they attend multiple classes and their academic performance are closely monitored and graded. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.
When we compared Murchison Middle School, which is a part of AUSTIN ISD, with Sadler Means Ywla, which is a part of AUSTIN ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Murchison Middle School’s regular student population is 1,213 with a 16.4 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Sadler Means Ywla is 290 students and a 10.7 students/teacher ratio.
Murchison Middle School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 87 in student achievement, 79 in school progress and 77 in closing performance gaps. It scored 84 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Sadler Means Ywla earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 52 in student achievement, 74 in school progress, 73 in closing performance gaps and 74 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for Murchison Middle School and Sadler Means Ywla are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Whites or Caucasians comprise the biggest group at Murchison Middle School. They make up for 58.20% of student population, followed by Hispanics (23.99%), Asians (7.25%), Two or More Races (6.02%), African Americans (4.37%) and Native Americans (0.16%).
At Sadler Means Ywla, Hispanics make up 77.93% of student population, followed by African Americans (12.41%), Asians (4.14%), Whites or Caucasians (3.45%), Two or More Races (1.38%) and Native Americans (0.69%).
Based on household incomes, the Murchison Middle School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 23.17% compared to 93.79% at Sadler Means Ywla.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Murchison Middle School has 164 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 13.52% of student population. Sadler Means Ywla has significantly more ELLs at 186 or about 64.14% of student population.
Murchison Middle School’s bilingual students comprise 13.77%, gifted and talented students, 20.28%, while 13.27% are in the special education program. Sadler Means Ywla bilingual students comprise 63.79%, gifted and talented students, 10.69%, and 17.59% are in the special education program.
Murchison Middle School's 73 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 10.7 years with individual teaching experience averaging 13.8 years. Teachers at Sadler Means Ywla, numbering 27 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 3.8 years with individual teaching experience averaging 5.5 years.
Of its teaching staff, Murchison Middle School has five teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has 16 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 20 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 13 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 17 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including five beginning teachers. Sadler Means Ywla no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, no teacher serving the school for 20-30 years, four teachers have worked for 11-20 years, five teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 11 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including seven beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Murchison Middle School there are 49 female teachers and 24 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, 15 special education teachers are being assisted by 11 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has four staff members in the school administration department and four more working as school support staff.
At Sadler Means Ywla there are 19 female teachers and eight male teachers. Of its teaching staff, four special education teachers are being assisted by three teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
