As your children go through high school, choosing the right school is equally important as deciding on a perfect home. When we compared Morton Ranch High School, which is a part of KATY ISD, with Tompkins High School, which is a part of KATY ISD, we noted a big difference in ratings.
Morton Ranch High School’s regular student population is 2,540 with a student-teacher ratio of 15 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Tompkins High School is 3,254 students and a student-teacher ratio of 16.5 students/teacher ratio.
Morton Ranch High School earned a State accountability rating of C (70-79) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 81 in student achievement, 82 in school progress and 72 in closing performance gaps. It scored 79 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Tompkins High School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 95 in student achievement, 85 in school progress, 94 in closing performance gaps and 95 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Morton Ranch High School’s three out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Science and Social Studies. Tompkins High School's six out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, post-secondary and 25% closing performance gaps.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Morton Ranch High School. They make up for 58.98% of student population, followed by African Americans (19.65%), Whites or Caucasians (13.35%), Asians (4.72%), Two or More Races (2.60%) and Native Americans (0.47%).
The student population at Tompkins High School is also predominantly by Whites or Caucasians at 33.62%, followed by Asians (29.35%), Hispanics (24.25%), African Americans (9.43%), Two or More Races (3.10%) and Native Americans (0.12%).
Based on household incomes, Morton Ranch High School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 68.74% compared to 14.78% at Tompkins High School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Morton Ranch High School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 15.79% of its student population compared to 5.47% at Tompkins High School.
In addition, Morton Ranch High School has 15.39% bilingual students, 3.19% are in the gifted and talented program, while 12.40% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Tompkins High School with 5.29% bilingual students, 16.63% gifted and talented students and 8.36% students in the special education program.
Morton Ranch High School's 169 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 7.1 years with individual teaching experience averaging nearly 11.5 years. Tompkins High School's 197 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 6.4 years with individual teaching experience averaging close to 11.2 years.
Of its teaching staff, Morton Ranch High School has five teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has 22 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 50 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 41 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 35 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including 16 beginning teachers. Tompkins High School has three teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has 20 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 73 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 45 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 54 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including three beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. Morton Ranch High School employs 97 female teachers and 72 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, 23 special education teachers are being assisted by 31 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. The school also employs seven staff members in the school administration department and 22 more working as school support staff.
On the other hand, Tompkins High School employs 118 female teachers and 79 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, 22 special education teachers are being assisted by 25 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. The school also employs seven staff members in the school administration department and 23 more working as school support staff.
