Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. As they assert their independence, their responsibilities increase, they attend multiple classes and their academic performance are closely monitored and graded. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.
When we compared Moorhead Junior High School, which is a part of CONROE ISD, with Travis Intermediate, which is a part of CONROE ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Moorhead Junior High School’s regular student population is 1,298 with a 15 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Travis Intermediate is 596 students and a 13.5 students/teacher ratio.
Moorhead Junior High School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 75 in student achievement, 84 in school progress and 74 in closing performance gaps. It scored 81 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Travis Intermediate earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 71 in student achievement, 82 in school progress, 73 in closing performance gaps and 79 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Except for Science, Moorhead Junior High School earned one out of seven distinctions. Travis Intermediate's two out of seven distinctions are in Science and post-secondary.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Moorhead Junior High School. They make up for 65.41% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (31.20%), African Americans (1.77%), Two or More Races (0.77%), Native Americans (0.62%) and Asians (0.23%).
At Travis Intermediate, Hispanics make up 76.68% of student population, followed by African Americans (13.26%), Whites or Caucasians (7.55%), Two or More Races (1.68%), Native Americans (0.50%) and Asians (0.34%).
Based on household incomes, the Moorhead Junior High School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 76.19% compared to 92.11% at Travis Intermediate.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Moorhead Junior High School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 37.44% of its student population compared to 57.72% at Travis Intermediate.
Moorhead Junior High School’s bilingual students comprise 35.36%, gifted and talented students, 4.85%, while 10.09% are in the special education program. Travis Intermediate bilingual students comprise 57.89%, gifted and talented students, 2.35%, and 15.94% are in the special education program.
Moorhead Junior High School's 86 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 6.1 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.2 years. Teachers at Travis Intermediate, numbering 44 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 6.4 years with individual teaching experience averaging 12.2 years.
Of its teaching staff, Moorhead Junior High School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has eight teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 29 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 16 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 27 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including five beginning teachers. Travis Intermediate has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has seven teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 15 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, nine teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while ten teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including two beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Moorhead Junior High School there are 66 female teachers and 20 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, 17 special education teachers are being assisted by 12 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has four staff members in the school administration department and ten more working as school support staff.
At Travis Intermediate there are 38 female teachers and six male teachers. Of its teaching staff, nine special education teachers are being assisted by 13 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has three staff members in the school administration department and 12 more working as school support staff.
