Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Moore Elementary School, which is a part of ARLINGTON ISD, with Farrell Elementary School, which is a part of ARLINGTON ISD, we noted a big difference in ratings.
Moore Elementary School has a regular student population of 872 with a 16.1 students/teacher ratio while Farrell Elementary School has 577 students and a student-teacher ratio of 15.3 students/teacher ratio.
Moore Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of C (70-79) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 77 in student achievement, 77 in school progress and 74 in closing performance gaps. It scored 76 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Farrell Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 75 in student achievement, 93 in school progress, 84 in closing performance gaps and 90 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Farrell Elementary School's three out of seven distinctions are in Science, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Moore Elementary School has no distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Whites or Caucasians comprise the biggest group at Moore Elementary School. They make up for 46.44% of student population, followed by Hispanics (27.41%), African Americans (15.25%), Two or More Races (5.96%), Asians (3.33%) and Native Americans (1.03%).
The student population at Farrell Elementary School is also predominantly by African Americans at 41.25%, followed by Hispanics (32.93%), Asians (14.73%), Whites or Caucasians (8.15%), Two or More Races (2.60%) and Native Americans (0.17%).
Based on household incomes, the Moore Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 43.46% compared to 77.99% at Farrell Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Moore Elementary School has 77 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 8.83% of student population. Farrell Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 179 or about 31.02% of student population.
In addition, Moore Elementary School has 8.60% bilingual students, 8.14% are in the gifted and talented program, while 15.37% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Farrell Elementary School with 31.02% bilingual students, 8.15% gifted and talented students and 8.84% students in the special education program.
54 teachers employed at Moore Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 9.1 years with individual teaching experience averaging 12.1 years. The 37 teachers at Farrell Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 11.1 years with individual teaching experience averaging 13.8 years.
Of its teaching staff, Moore Elementary School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has 11 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 13 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 15 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 14 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including one beginning teacher only. Farrell Elementary School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has ten teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, eight teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 13 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while six teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, and school has no beginning teacher.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Moore Elementary School there are 50 female teachers and four male teachers. Of its teaching staff, six special education teachers are being assisted by 14 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has three staff members in the school administration department and six more working as school support staff.
At Farrell Elementary School there are 36 female teachers and one male teacher only. Of its teaching staff, five special education teachers are being assisted by 13 teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
