Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Moore Elementary School, which is a part of ARLINGTON ISD, with Ashworth Elementary School, which is a part of ARLINGTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Moore Elementary School has a regular student population of 872 with a 16.1 students/teacher ratio while Ashworth Elementary School has 367 students and a student-teacher ratio of 13.1 students/teacher ratio.
Moore Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of C (70-79) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 77 in student achievement, 77 in school progress and 74 in closing performance gaps. It scored 76 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Ashworth Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 72 in student achievement, 89 in school progress, 78 in closing performance gaps and 86 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for Moore Elementary School and Ashworth Elementary School are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Whites or Caucasians comprise the biggest group at Moore Elementary School. They make up for 46.44% of student population, followed by Hispanics (27.41%), African Americans (15.25%), Two or More Races (5.96%), Asians (3.33%) and Native Americans (1.03%).
The student population at Ashworth Elementary School is also predominantly by Hispanics at 38.42%, followed by African Americans (30.25%), Whites or Caucasians (18.53%), Asians (6.27%), Two or More Races (5.18%) and Native Americans (0.54%).
Based on household incomes, the Moore Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 43.46% compared to 77.38% at Ashworth Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Moore Elementary School has 77 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 8.83% of student population. Ashworth Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 115 or about 31.34% of student population.
In addition, Moore Elementary School has 8.60% bilingual students, 8.14% are in the gifted and talented program, while 15.37% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Ashworth Elementary School with 31.34% bilingual students, 8.99% gifted and talented students and 15.53% students in the special education program.
54 teachers employed at Moore Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 9.1 years with individual teaching experience averaging 12.1 years. The 28 teachers at Ashworth Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 7.4 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10 years.
Of its teaching staff, Moore Elementary School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has 11 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 13 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 15 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 14 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including one beginning teacher only. Ashworth Elementary School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has four teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, nine teachers have worked for 11-20 years, two teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 13 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, and school has no beginning teacher.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Moore Elementary School there are 50 female teachers and four male teachers. Of its teaching staff, six special education teachers are being assisted by 14 teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
