Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Mohawk Elementary School, which is a part of RICHARDSON ISD, with Moss Haven Elementary School, which is a part of RICHARDSON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Mohawk Elementary School has a regular student population of 500 with a 13.4 students/teacher ratio while Moss Haven Elementary School has 510 students and a student-teacher ratio of 12.1 students/teacher ratio.
Mohawk Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 93 in student achievement, 86 in school progress and an impressive100 in closing performance gaps. It scored 95 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Moss Haven Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 91 in student achievement, 85 in school progress, 75 in closing performance gaps and 86 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Both schools garnered only one distinction designation or award for performance. For Mohawk Elementary School this is in 25% closing performance gaps while Moss Haven Elementary School secured one for Reading/English Language Arts (ELA).
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Mohawk Elementary School is Whites or Caucasians who make up nearly 80.40% of student population, followed by Asians (7.20%), Hispanics (6.60%), Two or More Races (3.40%), African Americans (1.60%) and Native Americans (0.80%).
At Moss Haven Elementary School, Whites or Caucasians are the biggest group, comprising 61.57% of student population, followed by African Americans (19.02%), Hispanics (13.14%), Two or More Races (3.92%), Asians (1.76%) and Native Americans (0.59%).
Based on household incomes, the Mohawk Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 7.80% compared to 22.55% at Moss Haven Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Mohawk Elementary School has 12 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 2.40% of student population. Moss Haven Elementary School has slightly more ELLs at 32 or about 6.27% of student population.
In addition, Mohawk Elementary School has 2.40% bilingual students, 9.20% are in the gifted and talented program, while 14.80% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Moss Haven Elementary School with 6.27% bilingual students, 12.75% gifted and talented students and 14.90% students in the special education program.
