Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. When we compared Mitchell Elementary School, which is a part of PLANO ISD, with Beverly Elementary School, which is a part of PLANO ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Mitchell Elementary School has a regular student population of 496 with a 11.8 students/teacher ratio while Beverly Elementary School has 360 students and a student-teacher ratio of 12 students/teacher ratio.
Mitchell Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 85 in student achievement, 84 in school progress and 78 in closing performance gaps. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Mitchell Elementary School’s only distinction designation is in Post-Secondary. Beverly Elementary School's six out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, African Americans comprise the biggest group at Mitchell Elementary School. They make up for 38.71% of student population, followed by Hispanics (26.61%), Whites or Caucasians (23.99%), Two or More Races (6.25%), Asians (4.23%) and Native Americans (0.20%).
The student population at Beverly Elementary School is also predominantly by Whites or Caucasians at 37.78%, followed by Asians (32.78%), Hispanics (11.94%), African Americans (10.28%) and Two or More Races (7.22%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
Based on household incomes, Mitchell Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 52.82% compared to 24.72% at Beverly Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Mitchell Elementary School has a higher number of English Language Learners comprising 13.10% of its student population compared to 15.28% at Beverly Elementary School.
In addition, Mitchell Elementary School has 12.50% bilingual students, 7.66% are in the gifted and talented program, while 11.49% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Beverly Elementary School with 15.28% bilingual students, 16.39% gifted and talented students and 11.39% students in the special education program.
