Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared Mina Elementary School, which is a part of BASTROP ISD, with Cedar Creek Elementary School, which is a part of BASTROP ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Mina Elementary School has a regular student population of 742 with a 14.9 students/teacher ratio while Cedar Creek Elementary School has 951 students and a student-teacher ratio of 19.1 students/teacher ratio.
Mina Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 82 in student achievement, 85 in school progress and 73 in closing performance gaps. It scored 81 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Cedar Creek Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 53 in student achievement, 79 in school progress, 61 in closing performance gaps and 74 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for Mina Elementary School and Cedar Creek Elementary School are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Whites or Caucasians comprise the biggest group at Mina Elementary School. They make up for 44.88% of student population, followed by Hispanics (39.76%), Two or More Races (6.87%), African Americans (6.74%), Asians (1.35%) and Native Americans (0.13%).
At Cedar Creek Elementary School, Hispanics make up 92.95% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (5.26%), Two or More Races (0.95%) and African Americans (0.84%). There is no Asians and Native Americansstudents in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Mina Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 61.05% compared to 92.01% at Cedar Creek Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Mina Elementary School has 36 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 4.85% of student population. Cedar Creek Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 648 or about 68.14% of student population.
Mina Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 4.45%, gifted and talented students, 7.41%, while 11.46% are in the special education program. Cedar Creek Elementary School bilingual students comprise 67.82%, gifted and talented students, 1.47%, and 8.10% are in the special education program.
