Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Miller Elementary School, which is a part of ARLINGTON ISD, with Duff Elementary School, which is a part of ARLINGTON ISD, we noted that the two schools are on opposite ends of the ratings spectrum.
Miller Elementary School has a regular student population of 598 with a 14.4 students/teacher ratio while Duff Elementary School has 593 students and a student-teacher ratio of 15.9 students/teacher ratio.
Miller Elementary School not rated a State accountability rating of Not Rated: SB 1365 (Not Rated per SB 1365) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 64 in student achievement, 70 in school progress and 68 in closing performance gaps. It scored 69 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Duff Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 91 in student achievement, 86 in school progress, 98 in closing performance gaps and 93 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Duff Elementary School's two out of seven distinctions are in Science and 25% closing performance gaps. Miller Elementary School has no distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, African Americans comprise the biggest group at Miller Elementary School. They make up for 32.78% of student population, followed by Hispanics (29.77%), Whites or Caucasians (27.26%), Asians (6.19%), Two or More Races (3.51%) and Native Americans (0.33%).
At Duff Elementary School, Whites or Caucasians are the biggest group, comprising 55.65% of student population, followed by Hispanics (28.16%), African Americans (8.94%), Two or More Races (3.54%), Asians (3.37%) and Native Americans (0.34%).
Based on household incomes, Miller Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 69.06% compared to 39.46% at Duff Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Miller Elementary School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 14.05% of its student population compared to 7.25% at Duff Elementary School.
In addition, Miller Elementary School has 14.05% bilingual students, 7.69% are in the gifted and talented program, while 16.72% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Duff Elementary School with 7.08% bilingual students, 10.96% gifted and talented students and 10.46% students in the special education program.
41 teachers employed at Miller Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 6.3 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10 years. The 37 teachers at Duff Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 12.3 years with individual teaching experience averaging 14.1 years.
Of its teaching staff, Miller Elementary School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has seven teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, eight teachers have worked for 11-20 years, nine teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 12 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including four beginning teachers. Duff Elementary School has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has eight teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 13 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, six teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while eight teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including one beginning teacher only.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Miller Elementary School there are 39 female teachers and two male teachers. Of its teaching staff, six special education teachers are being assisted by 13 teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
