Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Miller Elementary School, which is a part of PLANO ISD, with Sigler Elementary School, which is a part of PLANO ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Miller Elementary School has a regular student population of 348 with a 12.2 students/teacher ratio while Sigler Elementary School has 449 students and a student-teacher ratio of 10 students/teacher ratio.
Miller Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 92 in student achievement, 89 in school progress and 87 in closing performance gaps. It scored 91 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Sigler Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 73 in student achievement, 83 in school progress, 75 in closing performance gaps and 81 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for Miller Elementary School and Sigler Elementary School are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Whites or Caucasians comprise the biggest group at Miller Elementary School. They make up for 45.69% of student population, followed by Asians (22.70%), Hispanics (14.66%), African Americans (9.48%), Two or More Races (6.90%) and Native Americans (0.57%).
The student population at Sigler Elementary School is also predominantly by Hispanics at 51.45%, followed by African Americans (25.84%), Whites or Caucasians (15.14%), Two or More Races (4.45%) and Asians (3.12%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Miller Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 24.43% compared to 74.83% at Sigler Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Miller Elementary School has 65 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 18.68% of student population. Sigler Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 201 or about 44.77% of student population.
Miller Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 18.10%, gifted and talented students, 6.90%, while 13.51% are in the special education program. Sigler Elementary School bilingual students comprise 44.77%, gifted and talented students, 3.12%, and 18.26% are in the special education program.
28 teachers employed at Miller Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 9.6 years with individual teaching experience averaging 12.3 years. The 45 teachers at Sigler Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 8.2 years with individual teaching experience averaging 11.9 years.
Of its teaching staff, Miller Elementary School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has four teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 12 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, seven teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while four teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including two beginning teachers. Sigler Elementary School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has seven teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 16 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, ten teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while nine teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including two beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Miller Elementary School there are 27 female teachers and one male teacher only. Of its teaching staff, four special education teachers are being assisted by six teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has two staff members in the school administration department and three more working as school support staff.
At Sigler Elementary School there are 41 female teachers and three male teachers. Of its teaching staff, six special education teachers are being assisted by 15 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has two staff members in the school administration department and five more working as school support staff.
