Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Memorial High School's five out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, Social Studies and post-secondary. Westchester Academy For International Studies’s four out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science and 25% closing performance gaps.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Whites or Caucasians comprise the biggest group at Memorial High School. They make up for 53.65% of student population, followed by Hispanics (22.72%), Asians (16.63%), Two or More Races (4.39%), African Americans (2.41%) and Native Americans (0.20%).
At Westchester Academy For International Studies, Hispanics make up 68.36% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (17.09%), Asians (7.85%), African Americans (3.46%), Two or More Races (3.00%) and Native Americans (0.23%).
Based on household incomes, the Memorial High School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 14.22% compared to 57.97% at Westchester Academy For International Studies.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Memorial High School has 164 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 6.48% of student population. Westchester Academy For International Studies has significantly more ELLs at 192 or about 22.17% of student population.
