Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared Memorial Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Frost Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a big difference in ratings.
Memorial Elementary School has a regular student population of 368 with a 16.4 students/teacher ratio while Frost Elementary School has 527 students and a student-teacher ratio of 18.8 students/teacher ratio.
Memorial Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 90 in student achievement, 92 in school progress and an impressive100 in closing performance gaps. A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Memorial Elementary School's four out of seven distinctions are in Mathematics, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Frost Elementary School did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Memorial Elementary School. They make up for 60.60% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (19.57%), African Americans (8.15%), Two or More Races (5.98%), Asians (5.16%) and Native Americans (0.54%).
At Frost Elementary School, African Americans make up 68.88% of student population, followed by Hispanics (29.41%), Two or More Races (0.76%), Whites or Caucasians (0.57%) and Asians (0.38%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Memorial Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 54.89% compared to 98.48% at Frost Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Memorial Elementary School has a slightly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 29.89% of its student population compared to 18.79% at Frost Elementary School.
Memorial Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 56.52%, gifted and talented students, 8.70%, while 11.96% are in the special education program. Frost Elementary School bilingual students comprise 18.03%, gifted and talented students, 4.93%, and 6.83% are in the special education program.
