Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared Memorial Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Burrus Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a big difference in ratings.

Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Memorial Elementary School's four out of seven distinctions are in Mathematics, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Burrus Elementary School did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Memorial Elementary School. They make up for 60.60% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (19.57%), African Americans (8.15%), Two or More Races (5.98%), Asians (5.16%) and Native Americans (0.54%).
At Burrus Elementary School, African Americans make up 68.73% of student population, followed by Hispanics (28.36%), Two or More Races (1.82%) and Whites or Caucasians (1.09%). There is no Asians and Native Americansstudents in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Memorial Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 54.89% compared to 96.00% at Burrus Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Memorial Elementary School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 29.89% of its student population compared to 8.00% at Burrus Elementary School.
In addition, Memorial Elementary School has 56.52% bilingual students, 8.70% are in the gifted and talented program, while 11.96% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Burrus Elementary School with 8.00% bilingual students, 8.73% gifted and talented students and 6.18% students in the special education program.
