Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Memorial Elementary School, which is a part of PLANO ISD, with Harrington Elementary School, which is a part of PLANO ISD, we noted that the two schools are on opposite ends of the ratings spectrum.
Memorial Elementary School has a regular student population of 415 with a 9.5 students/teacher ratio while Harrington Elementary School has 349 students and a student-teacher ratio of 12.1 students/teacher ratio.

A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Harrington Elementary School's three out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics and Science. Memorial Elementary School has no distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Memorial Elementary School is Hispanics who make up nearly 74.70% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (12.53%), African Americans (8.67%), Two or More Races (2.41%), Asians (1.45%) and Native Americans (0.24%).
The student population at Harrington Elementary School is also predominantly by Whites or Caucasians at 42.69%, followed by Asians (20.92%), Hispanics (19.77%), African Americans (12.03%) and Two or More Races (4.58%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
Based on household incomes, Memorial Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 74.46% compared to 27.22% at Harrington Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Memorial Elementary School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 56.63% of its student population compared to 11.75% at Harrington Elementary School.
In addition, Memorial Elementary School has 55.42% bilingual students, 5.78% are in the gifted and talented program, while 14.46% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Harrington Elementary School with 11.75% bilingual students, 9.17% gifted and talented students and 14.90% students in the special education program.
43 teachers employed at Memorial Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 8.4 years with individual teaching experience averaging 12.9 years. The 28 teachers at Harrington Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 10.2 years with individual teaching experience averaging 12.1 years.
Of its teaching staff, Memorial Elementary School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has eight teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 18 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, ten teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while six teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including two beginning teachers.
