Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared McKenzie Elementary School, which is a part of MESQUITE ISD, with Shands Elementary School, which is a part of MESQUITE ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
McKenzie Elementary School has a regular student population of 407 with a 13.7 students/teacher ratio while Shands Elementary School has 552 students and a student-teacher ratio of 13.5 students/teacher ratio.
McKenzie Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 80 in student achievement, 91 in school progress and 88 in closing performance gaps. On the other hand, Shands Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 72 in student achievement, 91 in school progress, 78 in closing performance gaps and 87 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
McKenzie Elementary School's four out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, post-secondary and 25% closing performance gaps. Shands Elementary School did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at McKenzie Elementary School. They make up for 63.39% of student population, followed by African Americans (23.10%), Whites or Caucasians (10.07%), Two or More Races (2.21%), Native Americans (0.74%) and Asians (0.49%).
At Shands Elementary School, Hispanics make up 74.28% of student population, followed by African Americans (15.22%), Whites or Caucasians (7.97%), Two or More Races (1.09%), Native Americans (0.91%) and Asians (0.54%).
Based on household incomes, McKenzie Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly higher at 88.45% compared to 84.96% at Shands Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, McKenzie Elementary School has 154 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 37.84% of student population. Shands Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 255 or about 46.20% of student population.
McKenzie Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 38.33%, gifted and talented students, 2.70%, while 11.55% are in the special education program. Shands Elementary School bilingual students comprise 45.83%, gifted and talented students, 2.36%, and 14.49% are in the special education program.

The 41 teachers at Shands Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 9.8 years with individual teaching experience averaging 13 years.
