Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. Joella Exley Elementary School's three out of seven distinctions are in Mathematics, Science and post-secondary. McElwain Elementary School has no distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at McElwain Elementary School. They make up for 44.79% of student population, followed by African Americans (22.49%), Whites or Caucasians (17.18%), Asians (9.60%), Two or More Races (5.76%) and Native Americans (0.18%).
The student population at Joella Exley Elementary School is also predominantly by Whites or Caucasians at 33.86%, followed by Asians (25.69%), Hispanics (23.78%), African Americans (9.55%), Two or More Races (6.37%) and Native Americans (0.74%).
Based on household incomes, McElwain Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly higher at 42.14% compared to 37.79% at Joella Exley Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, McElwain Elementary School has 239 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 21.85% of student population. Joella Exley Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 336 or about 35.67% of student population.
In addition, McElwain Elementary School has 21.02% bilingual students, 1.83% are in the gifted and talented program, while 14.53% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Joella Exley Elementary School with 35.03% bilingual students, 3.93% gifted and talented students and 16.03% students in the special education program.
