Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared McElwain Elementary School, which is a part of KATY ISD, with Jenks Elementary School, which is a part of KATY ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
McElwain Elementary School has a regular student population of 1,094 with a 16.9 students/teacher ratio while Jenks Elementary School has 1,311 students and a student-teacher ratio of 13.1 students/teacher ratio.
McElwain Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 77 in student achievement, 82 in school progress and 77 in closing performance gaps. It scored 81 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Jenks Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 95 in student achievement, 93 in school progress, 100 in closing performance gaps and 97 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Jenks Elementary School's two out of seven distinctions are in Science and 25% closing performance gaps. McElwain Elementary School has no distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at McElwain Elementary School. They make up for 44.79% of student population, followed by African Americans (22.49%), Whites or Caucasians (17.18%), Asians (9.60%), Two or More Races (5.76%) and Native Americans (0.18%).
The student population at Jenks Elementary School is also predominantly by Asians at 33.56%, followed by Hispanics (31.66%), Whites or Caucasians (21.43%), African Americans (7.93%), Two or More Races (4.65%) and Native Americans (0.53%).
Based on household incomes, McElwain Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 42.14% compared to 15.48% at Jenks Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, McElwain Elementary School has 239 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 21.85% of student population. Jenks Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 539 or about 41.11% of student population.
In addition, McElwain Elementary School has 21.02% bilingual students, 1.83% are in the gifted and talented program, while 14.53% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Jenks Elementary School with 41.19% bilingual students, 8.09% gifted and talented students and 12.97% students in the special education program.
64 teachers employed at McElwain Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 4.2 years with individual teaching experience averaging 6.4 years. The 100 teachers at Jenks Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 6.1 years with individual teaching experience averaging 9.7 years.
Of its teaching staff, McElwain Elementary School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has two teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 13 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 15 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 25 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including ten beginning teachers. Jenks Elementary School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has seven teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 32 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 22 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 29 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including nine beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At McElwain Elementary School there are 62 female teachers and two male teachers. Of its teaching staff, five special education teachers are being assisted by 11 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has three staff members in the school administration department and eight more working as school support staff.
At Jenks Elementary School there are 99 female teachers and one male teacher only. Of its teaching staff, six special education teachers are being assisted by 23 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has four staff members in the school administration department and 14 more working as school support staff.
