As your children go through high school, choosing the right school is equally important as deciding on a perfect home. High school is when students are given the tools to figure out the paths they want to pursue as adults. There are more subjects and extra-curricular activities that students can choose from. When we compared Mayde Creek High School, which is a part of KATY ISD, with Katy High School, which is a part of KATY ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Mayde Creek High School’s regular student population is 2,827 with a student-teacher ratio of 15 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Katy High School is 3,189 students and a student-teacher ratio of 15.3 students/teacher ratio.
Mayde Creek High School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 84 in student achievement, 85 in school progress and 76 in closing performance gaps. It scored 82 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Katy High School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 91 in student achievement, 88 in school progress, 86 in closing performance gaps and 90 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Mayde Creek High School's three out of seven distinctions are in Science, Social Studies and 25% closing performance gaps. Katy High School’s two out of seven distinctions are in Science and post-secondary.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Mayde Creek High School. They make up for 57.23% of student population, followed by African Americans (21.83%), Whites or Caucasians (12.70%), Asians (5.45%), Two or More Races (2.26%) and Native Americans (0.42%).
The student population at Katy High School is also predominantly by Whites or Caucasians at 44.59%, followed by Hispanics (36.59%), African Americans (10.38%), Asians (4.80%), Two or More Races (3.20%) and Native Americans (0.16%).
Based on household incomes, Mayde Creek High School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 73.93% compared to 33.62% at Katy High School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Mayde Creek High School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 15.99% of its student population compared to 9.63% at Katy High School.
In addition, Mayde Creek High School has 15.60% bilingual students, 5.09% are in the gifted and talented program, while 13.05% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Katy High School with 9.25% bilingual students, 7.12% gifted and talented students and 10.72% students in the special education program.
Mayde Creek High School's 188 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 5.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging nearly 11 years. Katy High School's 209 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 9.3 years with individual teaching experience averaging close to 14.1 years.
Of its teaching staff, Mayde Creek High School has six teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has 25 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 55 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 27 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 62 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including 14 beginning teachers. Katy High School has 13 teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has 44 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 56 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 31 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 52 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including 13 beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. Mayde Creek High School employs 107 female teachers and 80 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, 28 special education teachers are being assisted by 32 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. The school also employs eight staff members in the school administration department and 23 more working as school support staff.
On the other hand, Katy High School employs 132 female teachers and 76 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, 27 special education teachers are being assisted by 32 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. The school also employs seven staff members in the school administration department and 26 more working as school support staff.
