Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. As they assert their independence, their responsibilities increase, they attend multiple classes and their academic performance are closely monitored and graded. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.

When we compared Mata Intermediate, which is a part of Alief ISD, with Miller Intermediate, which is a part of Alief ISD, we noted a big difference in ratings.

Mata Intermediate’s regular student population is 875 with a 14.2 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Miller Intermediate is 963 students and a 14.8 students/teacher ratio.
Performance Indicators
Mata Intermediate earned a State accountability rating of C (70-79) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 72 in student achievement, 82 in school progress, and 66 in closing performance gaps. It scored 77 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.

On the other hand, Miller Intermediate performed better to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 82 in student achievement, 91 in school progress, 91 in closing performance gaps and 91 overall in post-secondary readiness.

Distinction Designations
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.

It is in this area where the two schools differ. Mata Intermediate’s only distinction designation is in Comparative Closing the Gaps.Miller Intermediate’s five out of seven only distinction designation is in Comparative Closing the Gaps.

Student Demographics
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Mata Intermediate. They make up for 59.09% of student population, followed by African Americans (29.49%), Asians (6.51%), Whites or Caucasians (2.74%), Two or More Races (1.14%) and Native Americans (0.91%).

The student population at Miller Intermediate is also predominantly Hispanics at 42.37%, followed by African Americans (40.08%), Asians (10.80%), Whites or Caucasians (5.30%), Native Americans (0.83%) and Two or More Races (0.62%).

Based on household incomes, the Mata Intermediate’s economically disadvantaged students are lower at 88.80% compared to 81.10% at Miller Intermediate.

In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Mata Intermediate and Miller Intermediate have no English Language Leaners or ELLS.

In addition, Mata Intermediate has 45.94% bilingual students, 7.31% are in the gifted and talented program, while 9.37% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Miller Intermediate with 31.78% bilingual students, 9.24% gifted and talented students and 8.31% students in the special education program.

Mata Intermediate’s 62 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 8.3 years with individual teaching experience averaging 11 years. Teachers at Miller Intermediate, numbering 65 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 11.1 years with individual teaching experience averaging 13.4 years.

Of its teaching staff, Mata Intermediate has 12 teachers serving the school for over 20 years, 18 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, seven teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 17 teachers have worked for 1-5 years, including seven beginning teachers.
