Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. When we compared Martinez C Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Lovett Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Martinez C Elementary School has a regular student population of 307 with a 12.9 students/teacher ratio while Lovett Elementary School has 631 students and a student-teacher ratio of 16.6 students/teacher ratio.
Martinez C Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 67 in student achievement, 90 in school progress and 77 in closing performance gaps. It scored 86 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Lovett Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 92 in student achievement, 94 in school progress, 100 in closing performance gaps and 96 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Martinez C Elementary School’s two out of seven distinctions are in post-secondary and 25% closing performance gaps. Lovett Elementary School's four out of seven distinctions are in Mathematics, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Martinez C Elementary School. They make up for 56.68% of student population, followed by African Americans (42.35%), Whites or Caucasians (0.33%), Native Americans (0.33%) and Two or More Races (0.33%). There is no Asians student in the school.
The student population at Lovett Elementary School is also predominantly by Whites or Caucasians at 34.71%, followed by Hispanics (27.10%), African Americans (25.20%), Asians (7.77%), Two or More Races (4.60%) and Native Americans (0.48%).
Based on household incomes, Martinez C Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 99.02% compared to 36.13% at Lovett Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, 30.62% of students at Martinez C Elementary School are English Language Learners (ELL). On the other hand, Lovett Elementary School’s ELL comprise 14.90% of the school’s student population.
In addition, Martinez C Elementary School has 40.39% bilingual students, 2.61% are in the gifted and talented program, while 8.14% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Lovett Elementary School with 13.79% bilingual students, 31.85% gifted and talented students and 11.89% students in the special education program.
