Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Martinez C Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Briargrove Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Martinez C Elementary School has a regular student population of 307 with a 12.9 students/teacher ratio while Briargrove Elementary School has 812 students and a student-teacher ratio of 18.4 students/teacher ratio.
Martinez C Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 67 in student achievement, 90 in school progress and 77 in closing performance gaps. It scored 86 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Briargrove Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 80 in student achievement, 96 in school progress, 87 in closing performance gaps and 93 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Both schools garnered only two distinction designations or awards for performance. For Martinez C Elementary School these are in post-secondary and 25% closing performance gaps while Briargrove Elementary School secured in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA) and with 25% student progress.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Martinez C Elementary School. They make up for 56.68% of student population, followed by African Americans (42.35%), Whites or Caucasians (0.33%), Native Americans (0.33%) and Two or More Races (0.33%). There is no Asians student in the school.
The student population at Briargrove Elementary School is also predominantly by Hispanics at 33.74%, followed by Whites or Caucasians (24.01%), African Americans (20.20%), Asians (16.50%), Two or More Races (5.42%) and Native Americans (0.12%).
Based on household incomes, Martinez C Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 99.02% compared to 51.23% at Briargrove Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Martinez C Elementary School has 94 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 30.62% of student population. Briargrove Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 241 or about 29.68% of student population.
In addition, Martinez C Elementary School has 40.39% bilingual students, 2.61% are in the gifted and talented program, while 8.14% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Briargrove Elementary School with 27.83% bilingual students, 6.40% gifted and talented students and 6.53% students in the special education program.

Briargrove Elementary School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has six teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, five teachers have worked for 11-20 years, six teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 18 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including eight beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Martinez C Elementary School there are 21 female teachers and two male teachers. Of its teaching staff, two teachers are aides or paraprofessionals.
