Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. As they assert their independence, their responsibilities increase, they attend multiple classes and their academic performance are closely monitored and graded. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.
When we compared Macario Garcia Middle School, which is a part of FORT BEND ISD, with Sugar Land Middle School, which is a part of FORT BEND ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Macario Garcia Middle School’s regular student population is 1,401 with a 16.9 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Sugar Land Middle School is 1,065 students and a 16.5 students/teacher ratio.
Macario Garcia Middle School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 92 in student achievement, 92 in school progress and 97 in closing performance gaps. It scored 94 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.

Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Macario Garcia Middle School's six out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Social Studies, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Sugar Land Middle School’s two out of seven distinctions are in Science and Social Studies.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Asians comprise the biggest group at Macario Garcia Middle School. They make up for 48.75% of student population, followed by African Americans (21.27%), Hispanics (15.20%), Whites or Caucasians (11.42%), Two or More Races (2.36%) and Native Americans (0.57%).
The student population at Sugar Land Middle School is also predominantly by Hispanics at 36.15%, followed by Asians (29.20%), African Americans (15.87%), Whites or Caucasians (15.02%), Two or More Races (3.29%) and Native Americans (0.09%).
Based on household incomes, the Macario Garcia Middle School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 41.83% compared to 60.09% at Sugar Land Middle School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Macario Garcia Middle School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 19.20% of its student population compared to 21.78% at Sugar Land Middle School.
Macario Garcia Middle School’s bilingual students comprise 18.77%, gifted and talented students, 3.93%, while 10.06% are in the special education program. Sugar Land Middle School bilingual students comprise 21.22%, gifted and talented students, 2.44%, and 13.62% are in the special education program.
