Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. When we compared Leonard Middle School, which is a part of FORT WORTH ISD, with Forest Oak Middle School, which is a part of FORT WORTH ISD, we noted a wide disparity in ratings.
Leonard Middle School’s regular student population is 665 with a 13.5 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Forest Oak Middle School is 877 students and a 15.6 students/teacher ratio.
Leonard Middle School not rated a State accountability rating of Not Rated: SB 1365 (Not Rated per SB 1365) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 52 in student achievement, 58 in school progress and 64 in closing performance gaps. It scored 59 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Forest Oak Middle School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 67 in student achievement, 88 in school progress, 77 in closing performance gaps and 85 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Forest Oak Middle School's two out of seven distinctions are in post-secondary and with 25% student progress. Leonard Middle School has no distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Leonard Middle School. They make up for 48.42% of student population, followed by African Americans (36.54%), Whites or Caucasians (10.38%), Two or More Races (3.76%), Asians (0.75%) and Native Americans (0.15%).
At Forest Oak Middle School, Hispanics are the biggest group, comprising 60.78% of student population, followed by African Americans (31.70%), Whites or Caucasians (3.53%), Asians (2.96%), Two or More Races (0.91%) and Native Americans (0.11%).
Based on household incomes, the Leonard Middle School’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly lower at 93.38% compared to 97.04% at Forest Oak Middle School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Leonard Middle School has 179 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 26.92% of student population. Forest Oak Middle School has significantly more ELLs at 445 or about 50.74% of student population.
In addition, Leonard Middle School has 24.96% bilingual students, 8.42% are in the gifted and talented program, while 12.48% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Forest Oak Middle School with 47.89% bilingual students, 11.86% gifted and talented students and 11.40% students in the special education program.
