When we compared Lawson Middle School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Williams Middle School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Lawson Middle School’s regular student population is 1,374 with a 18.1 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Williams Middle School is 427 students and a 14.2 students/teacher ratio.
Lawson Middle School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 69 in student achievement, 89 in school progress and 81 in closing performance gaps. It scored 87 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Williams Middle School earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 54 in student achievement, 72 in school progress, 70 in closing performance gaps and 71 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Lawson Middle School's two out of seven distinctions are in with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Williams Middle School did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Lawson Middle School. They make up for 60.63% of student population, followed by African Americans (36.46%), Whites or Caucasians (1.53%), Two or More Races (0.87%), Asians (0.29%) and Native Americans (0.22%).
At Williams Middle School, Hispanics are the biggest group, comprising 54.10% of student population, followed by African Americans (41.92%), Whites or Caucasians (2.58%), Native Americans (0.70%), Two or More Races (0.47%) and Asians (0.23%).
Based on household incomes, the Lawson Middle School’s economically disadvantaged students is lower at 97.09% compared to 97.42% at Williams Middle School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Lawson Middle School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 40.68% of its student population compared to 38.41% at Williams Middle School.
Lawson Middle School’s bilingual students comprise 39.67%, gifted and talented students, 8.95%, while 13.83% are in the special education program. Williams Middle School bilingual students comprise 38.17%, gifted and talented students, 3.51%, and 14.52% are in the special education program.
Lawson Middle School's 75 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 5.1 years with individual teaching experience averaging 7.5 years. Teachers at Williams Middle School, numbering 30 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 7.4 years with individual teaching experience averaging 9 years.
