Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. As they assert their independence, their responsibilities increase, they attend multiple classes and their academic performance are closely monitored and graded. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.

When we compared Lancaster Middle School, which is a part of Lancaster ISD, with G W Carver 6th Grade Stem Learning Center, which is a part of Lancaster ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.

Lancaster Middle School’s regular student population is one with a 17.1 students/teacher ratio. The student population at G W Carver 6th Grade Stem Learning Center is 515 students and a 15.8 students/teacher ratio.
Performance Indicators
Lancaster Middle School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 78 in student achievement, 89 in school progress, and 82 in closing performance gaps. It scored 87 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.

On the other hand, G W Carver 6th Grade Stem Learning Center garnered a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 73 in student achievement, 84 in school progress, 64 in closing performance gaps and 78 overall in post-secondary readiness.

Distinction Designations
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.

It is in this area where the two schools differ. Lancaster Middle School’s five out of seven distinctions are in Mathematics, Social Studies, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. G W Carver 6th Grade Stem Learning Center’s two out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics.

Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Lancaster Middle School are African Americans who make up nearly 76.83% of student population, followed by Hispanics (17.82%), Whites or Caucasians (2.14%), Two or More Races (1.85%), Native Americans (0.78%) and Asians (0.49%).

At G W Carver 6th Grade Stem Learning Center, African Americans make up 76.89% of student population, followed by Hispanics (19.81%), Whites or Caucasians (1.75%), Two or More Races (1.17%) and Native Americans (0.39%). There is no Asians student in the school

Based on household incomes, Lancaster Middle School’s economically disadvantaged students are slightly lower at 84.62% compared to 91.26% at G W Carver 6th Grade Stem Learning Center.

Lancaster Middle School’s 60 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 3.6 years with individual teaching experience averaging 9.2 years. Teachers at G W Carver 6th Grade Stem Learning Center, numbering 33 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 5.1 years with individual teaching experience averaging 8.4 years.
