Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. When we compared Lamar Elementary School, which is a part of GOOSE CREEK CISD, with Crockett Elementary School, which is a part of GOOSE CREEK CISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Lamar Elementary School has a regular student population of 599 with a 13 students/teacher ratio while Crockett Elementary School has 689 students and a student-teacher ratio of 16.4 students/teacher ratio.
Lamar Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 76 in student achievement, 91 in school progress and 87 in closing performance gaps. It scored 90 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.

A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Lamar Elementary School's five out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Crockett Elementary School’s three out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Science and post-secondary.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Lamar Elementary School is Hispanics who make up nearly 75.29% of student population, followed by African Americans (14.52%), Whites or Caucasians (7.51%), Two or More Races (2.50%) and Native Americans (0.17%). There is no Asians student in the school.
At Crockett Elementary School, Hispanics make up 68.65% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (14.51%), African Americans (13.06%), Two or More Races (1.74%), Asians (1.31%) and Native Americans (0.73%).
Based on household incomes, Lamar Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 88.98% compared to 72.86% at Crockett Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Lamar Elementary School has 196 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 32.72% of student population. Crockett Elementary School has slightly more ELLs at 208 or about 30.19% of student population.
In addition, Lamar Elementary School has 32.55% bilingual students, 4.51% are in the gifted and talented program, while 12.19% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Crockett Elementary School with 29.90% bilingual students, 7.40% gifted and talented students and 10.30% students in the special education program.
