Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared Lamar Elementary School, which is a part of SAN ANTONIO ISD, with Irving Dual Language Academy, which is a part of SAN ANTONIO ISD, we noted a wide disparity in ratings.
Lamar Elementary School has a regular student population of 306 with a 11.8 students/teacher ratio while Irving Dual Language Academy has 531 students and a student-teacher ratio of 16.2 students/teacher ratio.
Lamar Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 71 in student achievement, 91 in school progress and 76 in closing performance gaps. It scored 87 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Irving Dual Language Academy not rated a State accountability rating of Not Rated: SB 1365. The school posted 55 in student achievement, 69 in school progress, 67 in closing performance gaps and 68 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Lamar Elementary School's one out of seven distinction is in with 25% student progress. Irving Dual Language Academy did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Lamar Elementary School is Hispanics who make up nearly 76.14% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (18.30%), African Americans (3.27%), Two or More Races (1.96%) and Asians (0.33%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
At Irving Dual Language Academy, Hispanics make up 96.80% of student population, followed by African Americans (1.88%), Whites or Caucasians (1.13%) and Asians (0.19%). There is no Native Americans and Two or More Racesstudents in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Lamar Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 70.59% compared to 87.57% at Irving Dual Language Academy.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Lamar Elementary School has 68 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 22.22% of student population. Irving Dual Language Academy has significantly more ELLs at 355 or about 66.85% of student population.
Lamar Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 29.74%, gifted and talented students, 10.13%, while 14.05% are in the special education program. Irving Dual Language Academy bilingual students comprise 99.44%, gifted and talented students, 4.14%, and 7.16% are in the special education program.
