As your children go through high school, choosing the right school is equally important as deciding on a perfect home. High school is when students are given the tools to figure out the paths they want to pursue as adults. There are more subjects and extra-curricular activities that students can choose from. When we compared Pieper High School, which is a part of COMAL ISD, with Smithson Valley High School, which is a part of COMAL ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Pieper High School’s regular student population is 875 with a student-teacher ratio of 16.9 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Smithson Valley High School is 2,582 students and a student-teacher ratio of 16 students/teacher ratio.
Pieper High School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 91 in student achievement, 78 in school progress and 81 in closing performance gaps. It scored 88 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Smithson Valley High School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 93 in student achievement, 80 in school progress, 85 in closing performance gaps and 91 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Pieper High School's two out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA) and Science. Smithson Valley High School did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Pieper High School. They make up for 45.14% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (44.11%), African Americans (4.23%), Two or More Races (3.66%), Asians (2.40%) and Native Americans (0.34%).
At Smithson Valley High School, Whites or Caucasians are the biggest group, comprising 56.08% of student population, followed by Hispanics (35.17%), Two or More Races (3.49%), African Americans (2.67%), Asians (1.78%) and Native Americans (0.46%).
Based on household incomes, Pieper High School’s economically disadvantaged students is higher at 16.57% compared to 15.14% at Smithson Valley High School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Pieper High School has 31 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 3.54% of student population. Smithson Valley High School has significantly more ELLs at 90 or about 3.49% of student population.
In addition, Pieper High School has 3.43% bilingual students, 11.89% are in the gifted and talented program, while 10.40% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Smithson Valley High School with 3.33% bilingual students, 13.56% gifted and talented students and 9.57% students in the special education program.
Pieper High School's 51 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 1.7 years with individual teaching experience averaging nearly 11.8 years. Smithson Valley High School's 161 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 5.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging close to 12.8 years.
Of its teaching staff, Pieper High School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has three teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 25 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 17 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while six teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including one beginning teacher only. Smithson Valley High School has six teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has 26 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 60 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 19 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 44 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including seven beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. Pieper High School employs 27 female teachers and 23 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, three special education teachers are being assisted by three teachers aides or paraprofessionals. The school also employs one staff members in the school administration department and five more working as school support staff.
On the other hand, Smithson Valley High School employs 96 female teachers and 65 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, ten special education teachers are being assisted by 19 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. The school also employs seven staff members in the school administration department and 23 more working as school support staff.
