John B Alexander High School’s regular student population is 2,979 with a student-teacher ratio of 17.5 students/teacher ratio. The student population at United South High School is 3,174 students and a student-teacher ratio of 16.5 students/teacher ratio.
John B Alexander High School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 93 in student achievement, 91 in school progress and 87 in closing performance gaps. A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. John B Alexander High School bagged all seven distinction awards in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. United South High School’s five out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in John B Alexander High School is Hispanics who make up nearly 98.12% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (0.94%), Asians (0.74%), African Americans (0.13%), Native Americans (0.03%) and Two or More Races (0.03%).
At United South High School, Hispanics make up 99.68% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (0.13%), African Americans (0.06%), Asians (0.06%) and Two or More Races (0.06%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
Based on household incomes, the John B Alexander High School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 58.54% compared to 86.23% at United South High School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, John B Alexander High School has 422 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 14.17% of student population. United South High School has significantly more ELLs at 867 or about 27.32% of student population.
John B Alexander High School’s bilingual students comprise 18.40%, gifted and talented students, 24.34%, while 7.39% are in the special education program. United South High School bilingual students comprise 31.57%, gifted and talented students, 15.15%, and 10.78% are in the special education program.
