Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared Jessup Elementary School, which is a part of PASADENA ISD, with Turner Elementary School, which is a part of PASADENA ISD, we noted a big difference in ratings.
Jessup Elementary School has a regular student population of 560 with a 11.8 students/teacher ratio while Turner Elementary School has 550 students and a student-teacher ratio of 14 students/teacher ratio.
Jessup Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of C (70-79) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 59 in student achievement, 77 in school progress and 69 in closing performance gaps. It scored 75 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Turner Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 80 in student achievement, 91 in school progress, 88 in closing performance gaps and 90 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Turner Elementary School's two out of seven distinctions are in with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Jessup Elementary School has no distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Jessup Elementary School is Hispanics who make up nearly 73.04% of student population, followed by African Americans (21.96%), Whites or Caucasians (3.75%), Two or More Races (0.71%), Asians (0.18%) and Native Americans (0.18%).
At Turner Elementary School, Hispanics are the biggest group, comprising 64.00% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (21.82%), African Americans (8.18%), Asians (4.00%) and Two or More Races (2.00%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
Based on household incomes, Jessup Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 96.07% compared to 63.27% at Turner Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Jessup Elementary School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 43.21% of its student population compared to 6.36% at Turner Elementary School.
Jessup Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 40.36%, gifted and talented students, 2.50%, while 12.68% are in the special education program. Turner Elementary School bilingual students comprise 1.09%, gifted and talented students, 1.45%, and 15.64% are in the special education program.
47 teachers employed at Jessup Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 7.8 years with individual teaching experience averaging 11.3 years. The 39 teachers at Turner Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 10 years with individual teaching experience averaging 11.4 years.
