When we compared Jasper High School, which is a part of PLANO ISD, with C A McMillen High School, which is a part of PLANO ISD, we noted a big difference in ratings.
Jasper High School’s regular student population is 1,252 with a student-teacher ratio of 17.1 students/teacher ratio. The student population at C A McMillen High School is 1,195 students and a student-teacher ratio of 15.6 students/teacher ratio.
Jasper High School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 94 in student achievement, 87 in school progress and 87 in closing performance gaps. It scored 92 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, C A McMillen High School earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 80 in student achievement, 75 in school progress, 74 in closing performance gaps and 78 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Jasper High School's six out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, post-secondary and with 25% student progress. C A McMillen High School’s three out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics and Social Studies.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Asians comprise the biggest group at Jasper High School. They make up for 49.20% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (25.80%), Hispanics (10.94%), African Americans (9.42%), Two or More Races (4.15%) and Native Americans (0.40%).
The student population at C A McMillen High School is also predominantly by Hispanics at 31.21%, followed by Whites or Caucasians (30.88%), Asians (21.59%), African Americans (11.72%), Two or More Races (4.27%) and Native Americans (0.25%).
Based on household incomes, the Jasper High School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 19.01% compared to 34.48% at C A McMillen High School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Jasper High School has 65 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 5.19% of student population. C A McMillen High School has significantly more ELLs at 205 or about 17.15% of student population.
Jasper High School’s bilingual students comprise 5.11%, gifted and talented students, 37.62%, while 6.31% are in the special education program. C A McMillen High School bilingual students comprise 16.99%, gifted and talented students, 18.16%, and 9.21% are in the special education program.
Jasper High School's 73 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 7.6 years with individual teaching experience averaging nearly 10.4 years. C A McMillen High School's 76 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 7 years with individual teaching experience averaging close to 10.8 years.
Of its teaching staff, Jasper High School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has ten teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 22 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 17 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 17 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including six beginning teachers. C A McMillen High School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has nine teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 30 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 13 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 15 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including nine beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. Jasper High School employs 48 female teachers and 24 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, 12 special education teachers are being assisted by six teachers aides or paraprofessionals. The school also employs five staff members in the school administration department and nine more working as school support staff.
On the other hand, C A McMillen High School employs 51 female teachers and 24 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, 18 special education teachers are being assisted by four teachers aides or paraprofessionals. The school also employs four staff members in the school administration department and eight more working as school support staff.
