Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared Jackson Elementary School, which is a part of LAMAR CISD, with Don Carter Elementary School, which is a part of LAMAR CISD, we noted a big difference in ratings.
Jackson Elementary School has a regular student population of 303 with a 11.1 students/teacher ratio while Don Carter Elementary School has 831 students and a student-teacher ratio of 15.6 students/teacher ratio.
Jackson Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of C (70-79) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 64 in student achievement, 74 in school progress and 75 in closing performance gaps. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Don Carter Elementary School's five out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Jackson Elementary School has no distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Jackson Elementary School is Hispanics who make up nearly 82.51% of student population, followed by African Americans (10.89%), Whites or Caucasians (5.94%), Asians (0.33%) and Two or More Races (0.33%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
The student population at Don Carter Elementary School is also predominantly by Hispanics at 29.48%, followed by Whites or Caucasians (25.87%), African Americans (24.43%), Asians (14.08%), Two or More Races (5.78%) and Native Americans (0.24%).
Based on household incomes, Jackson Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 92.74% compared to 36.70% at Don Carter Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Jackson Elementary School has 120 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 39.60% of student population. Don Carter Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 143 or about 17.21% of student population.
In addition, Jackson Elementary School has 39.60% bilingual students, 6.27% are in the gifted and talented program, while 23.43% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Don Carter Elementary School with 16.97% bilingual students, 12.88% gifted and talented students and 12.88% students in the special education program.
