Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Huffman Elementary School, which is a part of PLANO ISD, with Gulledge Elementary School, which is a part of PLANO ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Huffman Elementary School has a regular student population of 557 with a 13 students/teacher ratio while Gulledge Elementary School has 562 students and a student-teacher ratio of 13.3 students/teacher ratio.
Huffman Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 77 in student achievement, 90 in school progress and 81 in closing performance gaps. It scored 87 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Gulledge Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 93 in student achievement, 90 in school progress, 88 in closing performance gaps and 92 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for Huffman Elementary School and Gulledge Elementary School are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, African Americans comprise the biggest group at Huffman Elementary School. They make up for 36.09% of student population, followed by Hispanics (27.29%), Whites or Caucasians (19.57%), Asians (8.98%), Two or More Races (7.36%) and Native Americans (0.36%).
The student population at Gulledge Elementary School is also predominantly by Asians at 52.49%, followed by Whites or Caucasians (20.82%), Hispanics (11.92%), African Americans (8.54%), Two or More Races (5.34%) and Native Americans (0.89%).
Based on household incomes, Huffman Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 56.73% compared to 16.73% at Gulledge Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Huffman Elementary School has 97 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 17.41% of student population. Gulledge Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 145 or about 25.80% of student population.
In addition, Huffman Elementary School has 17.06% bilingual students, 10.05% are in the gifted and talented program, while 12.21% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Gulledge Elementary School with 24.56% bilingual students, 10.14% gifted and talented students and 10.68% students in the special education program.
43 teachers employed at Huffman Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 5.6 years with individual teaching experience averaging 8.1 years. The 42 teachers at Gulledge Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 7.1 years with individual teaching experience averaging 9.4 years.
Of its teaching staff, Huffman Elementary School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has four teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 11 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 11 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 13 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including five beginning teachers. Gulledge Elementary School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has four teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 11 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, eight teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 17 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including three beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Huffman Elementary School there are 42 female teachers and one male teacher only. Of its teaching staff, five special education teachers are being assisted by nine teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has two staff members in the school administration department and five more working as school support staff.
At Gulledge Elementary School there are 37 female teachers and four male teachers. Of its teaching staff, five special education teachers are being assisted by four teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
