Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. When we compared Houser Elementary School, which is a part of CONROE ISD, with Houston Elementary School, which is a part of CONROE ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Houser Elementary School has a regular student population of 569 with a 13.5 students/teacher ratio while Houston Elementary School has 610 students and a student-teacher ratio of 13.9 students/teacher ratio.
Houser Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 72 in student achievement, 86 in school progress and 76 in closing performance gaps. It scored 83 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Houston Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 69 in student achievement, 76 in school progress, 71 in closing performance gaps and 75 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Both schools garnered only one distinction designation or award for performance. For Houser Elementary School this is in Mathematics while Houston Elementary School secured one for Reading/English Language Arts (ELA).
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Houser Elementary School. They make up for 42.53% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (29.17%), African Americans (17.05%), Two or More Races (5.45%), Asians (5.10%) and Native Americans (0.53%).
At Houston Elementary School, Hispanics make up 73.77% of student population, followed by African Americans (14.59%), Whites or Caucasians (9.51%), Two or More Races (1.97%) and Native Americans (0.16%). There is no Asians student in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Houser Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 64.67% compared to 94.43% at Houston Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Houser Elementary School has 166 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 29.17% of student population. Houston Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 336 or about 55.08% of student population.
Houser Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 27.94%, gifted and talented students, 2.64%, while 14.24% are in the special education program. Houston Elementary School bilingual students comprise 54.92%, gifted and talented students, 0.16%, and 9.51% are in the special education program.
