Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Homestead Elementary School, which is a part of LEWISVILLE ISD, with Ethridge Elementary School, which is a part of LEWISVILLE ISD, we noted a big difference in ratings.
Homestead Elementary School has a regular student population of 473 with a 12.6 students/teacher ratio while Ethridge Elementary School has 375 students and a student-teacher ratio of 10.8 students/teacher ratio.
Homestead Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 92 in student achievement, 92 in school progress and 96 in closing performance gaps. It scored 93 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Ethridge Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 76 in student achievement, 69 in school progress, 72 in closing performance gaps and 75 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Homestead Elementary School's three out of seven distinctions are in post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Ethridge Elementary School’s only distinction designation is in Science.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Whites or Caucasians comprise the biggest group at Homestead Elementary School. They make up for 47.57% of student population, followed by Hispanics (21.14%), Asians (13.32%), African Americans (10.57%), Two or More Races (7.19%) and Native Americans (0.21%).
The student population at Ethridge Elementary School is also predominantly by Whites or Caucasians at 47.47%, followed by Hispanics (27.20%), African Americans (13.87%), Two or More Races (8.00%), Asians (2.67%) and Native Americans (0.27%).
Based on household incomes, the Homestead Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 21.35% compared to 44.00% at Ethridge Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Homestead Elementary School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 9.09% of its student population compared to 5.07% at Ethridge Elementary School.
In addition, Homestead Elementary School has 9.09% bilingual students, 5.92% are in the gifted and talented program, while 15.43% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Ethridge Elementary School with 5.07% bilingual students, 8.53% gifted and talented students and 25.33% students in the special education program.
37 teachers employed at Homestead Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 13.3 years with individual teaching experience averaging 17 years. The 34 teachers at Ethridge Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 8.5 years with individual teaching experience averaging 11.8 years.
Of its teaching staff, Homestead Elementary School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has 13 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 16 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, four teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while one teacher only has been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including three beginning teachers. Ethridge Elementary School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has seven teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 12 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, six teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while six teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including four beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Homestead Elementary School there are 35 female teachers and two male teachers. Of its teaching staff, three special education teachers are being assisted by five teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has two staff members in the school administration department and four more working as school support staff.
