As your children go through high school, choosing the right school is equally important as deciding on a perfect home. High school is when students are given the tools to figure out the paths they want to pursue as adults. There are more subjects and extra-curricular activities that students can choose from. When we compared Hillcrest High School, which is a part of DALLAS ISD, with Skyline High School, which is a part of DALLAS ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Hillcrest High School’s regular student population is 1,660 with a student-teacher ratio of 17 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Skyline High School is 4,264 students and a student-teacher ratio of 16.8 students/teacher ratio.
Hillcrest High School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 79 in student achievement, 87 in school progress and 76 in closing performance gaps. It scored 82 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Skyline High School earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 70 in student achievement, 75 in school progress, 68 in closing performance gaps and 72 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Hillcrest High School's four out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Science, Social Studies and post-secondary. Skyline High School’s only distinction designation is in Social Studies.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Hillcrest High School is Hispanics who make up nearly 70.18% of student population, followed by African Americans (15.96%), Whites or Caucasians (10.78%), Asians (1.45%), Two or More Races (1.14%) and Native Americans (0.30%).
At Skyline High School, Hispanics make up 76.08% of student population, followed by African Americans (21.25%), Whites or Caucasians (1.38%), Two or More Races (0.56%), Asians (0.30%) and Native Americans (0.30%).
Based on household incomes, the Hillcrest High School’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly lower at 70.12% compared to 73.26% at Skyline High School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Hillcrest High School has 788 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 47.47% of student population. Skyline High School has significantly more ELLs at 1822 or about 42.73% of student population.
In addition, Hillcrest High School has 44.82% bilingual students, 16.45% are in the gifted and talented program, while 7.95% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Skyline High School with 39.54% bilingual students, 17.42% gifted and talented students and 7.95% students in the special education program.
Hillcrest High School's 97 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 5.6 years with individual teaching experience averaging nearly 9.2 years. Skyline High School's 253 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 9.4 years with individual teaching experience averaging close to 11.9 years.
Of its teaching staff, Hillcrest High School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has eight teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 25 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 23 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 33 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including seven beginning teachers. Skyline High School has 16 teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has 35 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 61 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 43 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 82 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including 16 beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. Hillcrest High School employs 49 female teachers and 48 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, 11 special education teachers are being assisted by 11 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. The school also employs six staff members in the school administration department and 12 more working as school support staff.
On the other hand, Skyline High School employs 128 female teachers and 124 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, 27 special education teachers are being assisted by 28 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. The school also employs 12 staff members in the school administration department and 19 more working as school support staff.
