Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared Highlands Elementary School, which is a part of GOOSE CREEK CISD, with Alamo Elementary School, which is a part of GOOSE CREEK CISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Highlands Elementary School has a regular student population of 723 with a 14.8 students/teacher ratio while Alamo Elementary School has 796 students and a student-teacher ratio of 15.5 students/teacher ratio.
Highlands Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of C (70-79) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 72 in student achievement, 79 in school progress and 73 in closing performance gaps. It scored 77 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Alamo Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 79 in student achievement, 90 in school progress, 88 in closing performance gaps and 89 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Alamo Elementary School's four out of seven distinctions are in Science, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Highlands Elementary School has no distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Highlands Elementary School. They make up for 60.17% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (24.34%), African Americans (10.65%), Two or More Races (3.87%), Asians (0.55%) and Native Americans (0.28%).
At Alamo Elementary School, Hispanics are the biggest group, comprising 59.55% of student population, followed by African Americans (19.85%), Whites or Caucasians (14.20%), Two or More Races (3.64%), Asians (2.14%) and Native Americans (0.63%).
Based on household incomes, Highlands Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly higher at 77.87% compared to 71.23% at Alamo Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Highlands Elementary School has 196 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 27.11% of student population. Alamo Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 244 or about 30.65% of student population.
Highlands Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 26.42%, gifted and talented students, 7.19%, while 17.57% are in the special education program. Alamo Elementary School bilingual students comprise 32.41%, gifted and talented students, 6.16%, and 10.93% are in the special education program.
49 teachers employed at Highlands Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 5.2 years with individual teaching experience averaging 11.4 years. The 51 teachers at Alamo Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 8.3 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.5 years.
Of its teaching staff, Highlands Elementary School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has 11 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 14 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, eight teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while ten teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including six beginning teachers.
