Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. When we compared Helms Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Garden Oaks Montessori, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Helms Elementary School has a regular student population of 457 with a 15.2 students/teacher ratio while Garden Oaks Montessori has 800 students and a student-teacher ratio of 18.5 students/teacher ratio.
Helms Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 90 in student achievement, 95 in school progress and an impressive100 in closing performance gaps. It scored 97 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Garden Oaks Montessori earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 78 in student achievement, 89 in school progress, 77 in closing performance gaps and 85 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Helms Elementary School's five out of seven distinctions are in Mathematics, Science, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Garden Oaks Montessori did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Helms Elementary School is Hispanics who make up nearly 75.93% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (14.88%), African Americans (5.69%), Two or More Races (1.97%) and Asians (1.53%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
The student population at Garden Oaks Montessori is also predominantly by Hispanics at 52.88%, followed by Whites or Caucasians (31.88%), Two or More Races (5.25%), African Americans (5.00%), Asians (4.38%) and Native Americans (0.50%).
Based on household incomes, Helms Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 56.89% compared to 41.25% at Garden Oaks Montessori.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Helms Elementary School has 186 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 40.70% of student population. Garden Oaks Montessori has more ELLs at 191 or about 23.88% of student population.
In addition, Helms Elementary School has 97.59% bilingual students, 10.50% are in the gifted and talented program, while 11.16% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Garden Oaks Montessori with 23.88% bilingual students, 22.25% gifted and talented students and 14.38% students in the special education program.
30 teachers employed at Helms Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 9.7 years with individual teaching experience averaging 11.6 years. The 43 teachers at Garden Oaks Montessori have been serving the school for an average of 8.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging 12.4 years.
Of its teaching staff, Helms Elementary School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has one teacher only serving the school for 20-30 years, 12 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, eight teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while six teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including two beginning teachers. Garden Oaks Montessori has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has five teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 15 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 11 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while seven teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including three beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Helms Elementary School there are 27 female teachers and three male teachers. Of its teaching staff, one special education teacher is being assisted by four teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
