Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. When we compared Harvard Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Kashmere Gardens Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Harvard Elementary School has a regular student population of 677 with a 18.3 students/teacher ratio while Kashmere Gardens Elementary School has 445 students and a student-teacher ratio of 16.5 students/teacher ratio.
Harvard Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 92 in student achievement, 94 in school progress and an impressive100 in closing performance gaps. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Harvard Elementary School's four out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Kashmere Gardens Elementary School’s only distinction designation is in Comparative Academic Growth.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Whites or Caucasians comprise the biggest group at Harvard Elementary School. They make up for 51.70% of student population, followed by Hispanics (28.80%), Two or More Races (7.68%), Asians (6.35%), African Americans (5.32%) and Native Americans (0.15%).
At Kashmere Gardens Elementary School, African Americans make up 78.65% of student population, followed by Hispanics (19.10%), Two or More Races (1.12%) and Whites or Caucasians (0.90%). There is no Asians and Native Americansstudents in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Harvard Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 19.50% compared to 98.88% at Kashmere Gardens Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Harvard Elementary School has 30 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 4.43% of student population. Kashmere Gardens Elementary School has slightly more ELLs at 45 or about 10.11% of student population.
Harvard Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 4.73%, gifted and talented students, 28.66%, while 4.73% are in the special education program. Kashmere Gardens Elementary School bilingual students comprise 9.66%, gifted and talented students, 1.57%, and 5.62% are in the special education program.
