When we compared Harker Heights High School, which is a part of KILLEEN ISD, with Killeen High School, which is a part of KILLEEN ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Harker Heights High School’s regular student population is 2,674 with a student-teacher ratio of 17.8 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Killeen High School is 2,187 students and a student-teacher ratio of 17.7 students/teacher ratio.
Harker Heights High School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 83 in student achievement, 73 in school progress and 75 in closing performance gaps. It scored 81 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Killeen High School earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 78 in student achievement, 80 in school progress, 68 in closing performance gaps and 76 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Killeen High School's two out of seven distinctions are in Science and Social Studies. Harker Heights High School has no distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Harker Heights High School. They make up for 31.04% of student population, followed by African Americans (28.38%), Whites or Caucasians (25.39%), Two or More Races (9.35%), Asians (3.29%) and Native Americans (0.49%).
The student population at Killeen High School is also predominantly by Hispanics at 37.40%, followed by African Americans (35.30%), Whites or Caucasians (16.14%), Two or More Races (6.17%), Asians (2.10%) and Native Americans (0.46%).
Based on household incomes, the Harker Heights High School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 31.49% compared to 89.35% at Killeen High School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Harker Heights High School has 154 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 5.76% of student population. Killeen High School has significantly more ELLs at 297 or about 13.58% of student population.
Harker Heights High School’s bilingual students comprise 5.01%, gifted and talented students, 5.68%, while 13.69% are in the special education program. Killeen High School bilingual students comprise 12.25%, gifted and talented students, 2.47%, and 17.74% are in the special education program.
Harker Heights High School's 150 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 9.2 years with individual teaching experience averaging nearly 11.6 years. Killeen High School's 123 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 8.7 years with individual teaching experience averaging close to 10.4 years.
Of its teaching staff, Harker Heights High School has nine teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has 20 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 40 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 33 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 39 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including nine beginning teachers. Killeen High School has five teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has 14 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 28 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 28 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 42 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including seven beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. Harker Heights High School employs 88 female teachers and 62 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, 12 special education teachers are being assisted by 25 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. The school also employs ten staff members in the school administration department and 18 more working as school support staff.
On the other hand, Killeen High School employs 67 female teachers and 56 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, seven special education teachers are being assisted by 18 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. The school also employs ten staff members in the school administration department and 18 more working as school support staff.
