Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. When we compared Hamilton Middle School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Pin Oak Middle School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Hamilton Middle School’s regular student population is 919 with a 17.8 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Pin Oak Middle School is 1,224 students and a 18.7 students/teacher ratio.
Hamilton Middle School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 79 in student achievement, 90 in school progress and 82 in closing performance gaps. It scored 88 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Pin Oak Middle School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 93 in student achievement, 92 in school progress, 100 in closing performance gaps and 95 overall in post-secondary readiness.

Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Hamilton Middle School’s four out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, post-secondary and 25% closing performance gaps. Pin Oak Middle School's seven out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Hamilton Middle School is Hispanics who make up nearly 88.36% of student population, followed by African Americans (7.07%), Whites or Caucasians (3.26%), Two or More Races (0.76%) and Asians (0.54%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
The student population at Pin Oak Middle School is also predominantly by Whites or Caucasians at 37.25%, followed by Hispanics (33.58%), Asians (16.50%), African Americans (8.01%) and Two or More Races (4.58%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
Based on household incomes, Hamilton Middle School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 85.42% compared to 34.56% at Pin Oak Middle School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Hamilton Middle School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 29.71% of its student population compared to 14.30% at Pin Oak Middle School.
In addition, Hamilton Middle School has 31.88% bilingual students, 32.97% are in the gifted and talented program, while 10.01% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Pin Oak Middle School with 15.36% bilingual students, 59.07% gifted and talented students and 5.64% students in the special education program.
Hamilton Middle School's 51 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 8.8 years with individual teaching experience averaging 11.7 years.
