Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Gulledge Elementary School, which is a part of PLANO ISD, with Huffman Elementary School, which is a part of PLANO ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Gulledge Elementary School has a regular student population of 562 with a 13.3 students/teacher ratio while Huffman Elementary School has 557 students and a student-teacher ratio of 13 students/teacher ratio.
Gulledge Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 93 in student achievement, 90 in school progress and 88 in closing performance gaps. It scored 92 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Huffman Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 77 in student achievement, 90 in school progress, 81 in closing performance gaps and 87 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for Gulledge Elementary School and Huffman Elementary School are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Asians comprise the biggest group at Gulledge Elementary School. They make up for 52.49% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (20.82%), Hispanics (11.92%), African Americans (8.54%), Two or More Races (5.34%) and Native Americans (0.89%).
The student population at Huffman Elementary School is also predominantly by African Americans at 36.09%, followed by Hispanics (27.29%), Whites or Caucasians (19.57%), Asians (8.98%), Two or More Races (7.36%) and Native Americans (0.36%).
Based on household incomes, the Gulledge Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 16.73% compared to 56.73% at Huffman Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Gulledge Elementary School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 25.80% of its student population compared to 17.41% at Huffman Elementary School.
Gulledge Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 24.56%, gifted and talented students, 10.14%, while 10.68% are in the special education program. Huffman Elementary School bilingual students comprise 17.06%, gifted and talented students, 10.05%, and 12.21% are in the special education program.
42 teachers employed at Gulledge Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 7.1 years with individual teaching experience averaging 9.4 years. The 43 teachers at Huffman Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 5.6 years with individual teaching experience averaging 8.1 years.
Of its teaching staff, Gulledge Elementary School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has four teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 11 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, eight teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 17 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including three beginning teachers. Huffman Elementary School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has four teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 11 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 11 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 13 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including five beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Gulledge Elementary School there are 37 female teachers and four male teachers. Of its teaching staff, five special education teachers are being assisted by four teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has two staff members in the school administration department and four more working as school support staff.
At Huffman Elementary School there are 42 female teachers and one male teacher only. Of its teaching staff, five special education teachers are being assisted by nine teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
