Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared Geneva Heights Elementary School, which is a part of DALLAS ISD, with Umphrey Lee Elementary School, which is a part of DALLAS ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Geneva Heights Elementary School has a regular student population of 514 with a 15.1 students/teacher ratio while Umphrey Lee Elementary School has 408 students and a student-teacher ratio of 15 students/teacher ratio.
Geneva Heights Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of C (70-79) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 74 in student achievement, 63 in school progress and 65 in closing performance gaps. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Except for Mathematics, Geneva Heights Elementary School earned one out of seven distinctions. Umphrey Lee Elementary School's two out of seven distinctions are in Mathematics and post-secondary.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Geneva Heights Elementary School. They make up for 43.58% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (36.19%), African Americans (11.09%), Two or More Races (6.03%), Asians (2.14%) and Native Americans (0.58%).
The student population at Umphrey Lee Elementary School is also predominantly by African Americans at 50.74%, followed by Hispanics (44.85%), Two or More Races (1.96%), Native Americans (1.47%) and Whites or Caucasians (0.98%). There is no Asians student in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Geneva Heights Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 43.77% compared to 98.28% at Umphrey Lee Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Geneva Heights Elementary School has 99 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 19.26% of student population. Umphrey Lee Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 150 or about 36.76% of student population.
In addition, Geneva Heights Elementary School has 47.08% bilingual students, 12.65% are in the gifted and talented program, while 8.95% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Umphrey Lee Elementary School with 34.80% bilingual students, 14.22% gifted and talented students and 11.27% students in the special education program.
