Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Garden Oaks Montessori, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Elrod Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Garden Oaks Montessori has a regular student population of 800 with a 18.5 students/teacher ratio while Elrod Elementary School has 696 students and a student-teacher ratio of 16.6 students/teacher ratio.
Garden Oaks Montessori earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 78 in student achievement, 89 in school progress and 77 in closing performance gaps. It scored 85 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Elrod Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 75 in student achievement, 96 in school progress, 87 in closing performance gaps and 93 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Elrod Elementary School's five out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Science, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Garden Oaks Montessori has no distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Garden Oaks Montessori. They make up for 52.88% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (31.88%), Two or More Races (5.25%), African Americans (5.00%), Asians (4.38%) and Native Americans (0.50%).
At Elrod Elementary School, Hispanics make up 73.99% of student population, followed by African Americans (20.26%), Asians (3.74%), Whites or Caucasians (1.44%) and Native Americans (0.57%). There is no Two or More Races student in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Garden Oaks Montessori’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 41.25% compared to 98.28% at Elrod Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Garden Oaks Montessori has 191 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 23.88% of student population. Elrod Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 396 or about 56.90% of student population.
Garden Oaks Montessori’s bilingual students comprise 23.88%, gifted and talented students, 22.25%, while 14.38% are in the special education program. Elrod Elementary School bilingual students comprise 64.37%, gifted and talented students, 2.01%, and 5.89% are in the special education program.
43 teachers employed at Garden Oaks Montessori have been teaching in the school for an average of about 8.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging 12.4 years. The 42 teachers at Elrod Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 8.1 years with individual teaching experience averaging 11 years.
Of its teaching staff, Garden Oaks Montessori has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has five teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 15 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 11 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while seven teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including three beginning teachers. Elrod Elementary School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has three teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 15 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 11 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while ten teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including two beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Garden Oaks Montessori there are 34 female teachers and nine male teachers. Of its teaching staff, two special education teachers are being assisted by nine teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has one staff members in the school administration department and six more working as school support staff.
