Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. As they assert their independence, their responsibilities increase, they attend multiple classes and their academic performance are closely monitored and graded. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.
When we compared Frankford Middle School, which is a part of PLANO ISD, with Bowman Middle School, which is a part of PLANO ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Frankford Middle School’s regular student population is 973 with a 15 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Bowman Middle School is 839 students and a 12.9 students/teacher ratio.
Frankford Middle School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 83 in student achievement, 89 in school progress and 87 in closing performance gaps. It scored 88 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Bowman Middle School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 85 in student achievement, 91 in school progress, 93 in closing performance gaps and 92 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Frankford Middle School’s five out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Bowman Middle School's seven out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Frankford Middle School. They make up for 33.09% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (29.09%), African Americans (26.52%), Asians (5.65%), Two or More Races (5.14%) and Native Americans (0.41%).
At Bowman Middle School, Hispanics are the biggest group, comprising 58.28% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (17.88%), African Americans (10.85%), Asians (10.25%) and Two or More Races (2.62%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Frankford Middle School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 43.06% compared to 60.07% at Bowman Middle School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Frankford Middle School has 217 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 22.30% of student population. Bowman Middle School has significantly more ELLs at 334 or about 39.81% of student population.
In addition, Frankford Middle School has 21.89% bilingual students, 13.26% are in the gifted and talented program, while 13.46% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Bowman Middle School with 39.57% bilingual students, 17.04% gifted and talented students and 13.83% students in the special education program.
Frankford Middle School's 64 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 6.4 years with individual teaching experience averaging 8.7 years. In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Frankford Middle School there are 48 female teachers and 16 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, nine special education teachers are being assisted by seven teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has four staff members in the school administration department and six more working as school support staff.
At Bowman Middle School there are 46 female teachers and 18 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, 13 special education teachers are being assisted by eight teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
