Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Forest Lane Academy, which is a part of RICHARDSON ISD, with Stults Road Elementary School, which is a part of RICHARDSON ISD, we noted a huge gap in ratings.
Forest Lane Academy has a regular student population of 609 with a 13.7 students/teacher ratio while Stults Road Elementary School has 625 students and a student-teacher ratio of 12.9 students/teacher ratio.
Forest Lane Academy not rated a State accountability rating of Not Rated: SB 1365 (Not Rated per SB 1365) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 57 in student achievement, 69 in school progress and 65 in closing performance gaps. It scored 68 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Stults Road Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 62 in student achievement, 79 in school progress, 71 in closing performance gaps and 77 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for Forest Lane Academy and Stults Road Elementary School are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, African Americans comprise the biggest group at Forest Lane Academy. They make up for 63.38% of student population, followed by Hispanics (26.77%), Asians (4.60%), Whites or Caucasians (2.79%), Two or More Races (2.30%) and Native Americans (0.16%).
The student population at Stults Road Elementary School is also predominantly by African Americans at 43.20%, followed by Hispanics (41.60%), Whites or Caucasians (7.68%), Asians (4.00%), Two or More Races (3.20%) and Native Americans (0.32%).
Based on household incomes, Forest Lane Academy’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 98.03% compared to 81.28% at Stults Road Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Forest Lane Academy has 180 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 29.56% of student population. Stults Road Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 295 or about 47.20% of student population.
Forest Lane Academy’s bilingual students comprise 29.56%, gifted and talented students, 3.28%, while 8.87% are in the special education program. Stults Road Elementary School bilingual students comprise 46.72%, gifted and talented students, 1.76%, and 11.84% are in the special education program.
44 teachers employed at Forest Lane Academy have been teaching in the school for an average of about 3.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging 7.8 years. The 48 teachers at Stults Road Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 5.1 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.1 years.
Of its teaching staff, Forest Lane Academy no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has one teacher only serving the school for 20-30 years, nine teachers have worked for 11-20 years, nine teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 22 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including four beginning teachers. Stults Road Elementary School has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has four teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 12 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, seven teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 13 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including ten beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Forest Lane Academy there are 34 female teachers and ten male teachers. Of its teaching staff, two special education teachers are being assisted by five teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has three staff members in the school administration department and seven more working as school support staff.
At Stults Road Elementary School there are 45 female teachers and three male teachers. Of its teaching staff, five special education teachers are being assisted by five teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
